Northern Cross

にわかに、車のなかが、ぱっと白く明るくなりました。
見ると、もうじつに金剛石や草の露やあらゆる立派さをあつめたような、きらびやかな銀河の河床の上を水は声もかたちもなく流れ、その流れのまん中に、ぼうっと青白く後光の射した一つの島が見えるのでした。
その島の平らないただきに、立派な眼もさめるような、白い十字架がたって、それはもう凍った北極の雲で鋳たといったらいいか、すきっとした金いろの円光をいただいて、しずかに永久に立っているのでした。

Suddenly, the inside of the train was filled with white light.
They looked out to the Milky Way river.
Through the transparent water flowing silently, the river-bed looked so gorgeous as to be filled with diamond, dew on a leaf and everything magnificent and beautiful.
In the middle of the river, was an island with a round arch of dimly pale halo above it.
On the level top of the island, did stand a brilliant and amazing white Cross, quietly and eternally, surrounded by the golden aureole as majestic as if it had been cast from a frozen cloud in the Arctic.
